Boswellia and AKBA: The Number That Actually Matters
Boswellia is one of those ingredients that looks the same on every label and behaves very differently in every bottle. Two products can both say "Boswellia serrata extract 500 mg" and contain meaningfully different amounts of the compounds the research is actually about. The number that separates them is usually printed in small type, if it's printed at all — and once you know to look for it, the category sorts itself out quickly.
What boswellia is
Boswellia serrata is a tree native to India, and the supplement comes from its resin — the same gum resin known historically as frankincense. It has a long history of traditional use, and modern interest centres on a family of compounds it contains called boswellic acids, studied for their role in supporting normal joint comfort and mobility.
The resin itself is not the active material in any useful sense. It's the carrier. What matters is how much of the boswellic acids ended up in the extract, and which ones.
The standardisation number
This is the first thing to look for. A serious boswellia product is standardised — meaning the extract is processed and verified to contain a specified percentage of boswellic acids, consistently, batch after batch.
You'll typically see figures like 65% or 70% total boswellic acids. A product that simply says "Boswellia serrata extract" with no standardisation figure is telling you nothing about potency. It could be a well-concentrated extract or it could be closer to powdered resin, and there is no way to tell from the outside. That silence is the same signal as an unnamed mineral form: a brand proud of its number prints it.
So the first comparison between two boswellia products isn't milligrams against milligrams. It's milligrams multiplied by standardisation percentage — which frequently reverses which product looks stronger.
AKBA: the number behind the number
Now the part that separates a good boswellia from a very good one.
Boswellic acids are not a single compound but a group, and they are not equally interesting. The one that attracts the most research attention is AKBA — acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid. It is generally regarded as the most biologically active of the group, and it is present in ordinary resin at quite low levels, typically a small single-digit percentage of the total.
That creates an obvious opportunity for a manufacturer willing to work at it: concentrate the extract specifically for AKBA rather than for total boswellic acids. Extracts standardised to 10%, 20% or higher AKBA exist, and they cost more to produce because enriching for a minor constituent is harder than concentrating the bulk.
So a product declaring both a total boswellic acid percentage and a specific AKBA percentage is telling you something real. A product declaring neither is asking you to take the word "boswellia" on faith.
The absorption question
Boswellic acids share the problem that runs through this entire journal: they are poorly water-soluble and absorb modestly on their own.
The main approach to fixing it is the phytosome — binding the extract to phospholipids, the same class of molecules that make up cell membranes, to help it cross the gut wall. It's the same technique used for berberine and for several other botanicals with the same difficulty, and it's the reason a phytosome boswellia can deliver more from a smaller dose than a larger dose of plain extract.
Boswellic acids are also lipophilic, which means taking boswellia with a meal containing fat is a free improvement. As with CoQ10, this is a habit that costs nothing and does more than most people's choice of brand.
What to expect, and when
Boswellia is not a fast-acting compound. Research and traditional use both point to consistent daily intake over weeks rather than a same-day effect, so the sensible framing is an eight-week commitment before forming any view — the same discipline berberine requires.
That expectation matters because the failure mode is predictable. People take it for ten days, notice nothing dramatic, and conclude it doesn't work — having never reached the window where consistency starts to matter.
It's also worth saying plainly that boswellia is studied for supporting normal joint comfort and mobility, not as a treatment for any condition. If you're managing a diagnosed joint condition or taking prescribed medication, boswellia is a conversation to have with your doctor rather than a decision to make from a product page.
How to read a boswellia label
Four checks and you've done more analysis than most buyers.
Is the extract standardised, and to what percentage of total boswellic acids? Is AKBA specified separately, with its own percentage? Does the product address absorption — a named phytosome, or nothing at all? And is the extract amount disclosed on its own line rather than folded into a joint-support blend with six other botanicals and one combined weight?
That last one is common in this category. Boswellia appears constantly as a supporting name in blends where its actual quantity is unknowable, which lets a product benefit from the ingredient's reputation without paying for a meaningful amount of it.
