Curcumin Barely Absorbs. Here's How to Fix That.
Curcumin is one of the most studied compounds in all of nutrition — the active pigment in turmeric, the subject of a genuinely large body of research, and a fixture on supplement shelves everywhere. It's also one of the most poorly absorbed compounds you can buy. Those two facts sit in uncomfortable tension, and understanding that tension is the difference between a curcumin supplement that does something and one that's mostly an expensive way to color your capsules yellow.
The absorption problem at the heart of curcumin
Here's the catch nobody puts on the front of the bottle: taken on its own, most curcumin never reaches your bloodstream in a meaningful way. It's poorly soluble, it's metabolised and cleared rapidly, and a large fraction of what you swallow passes through without being absorbed. This part is not controversial — it is the single most consistent finding in the curcumin literature, and it's why the field has spent decades working on delivery rather than simply raising the dose.
So the compound everyone talks about is, in a plain curcumin capsule, largely going to waste. The dose in the capsule and the dose that reaches your system are two very different numbers. This should sound familiar if you've read about berberine or magnesium — the amount in the bottle is a claim about contents, not a promise about absorption. With curcumin, that gap is unusually wide.
The black pepper question — and why we're going to be careful here
The best-known proposed fix is piperine, the active compound in black pepper, standardised in supplements as BioPerine®. The mechanism is plausible: piperine appears to slow some of the metabolic processes that clear curcumin before it can be absorbed.
You will see one number quoted everywhere in support of this — a 2000%, or twenty-fold, increase in curcumin bioavailability. That number is real in the sense that it comes from a real study: Shoba and colleagues, published in Planta Medica in 1998, giving 2 g of curcumin with 20 mg of piperine to a small group of human volunteers.
But we'd rather tell you the whole picture than the convenient half of it. That 1998 result has not been independently replicated in the nearly three decades since, despite being one of the most-cited findings in the entire supplement industry. More recent independent work has failed to reproduce it — including a 2025 crossover study which measured unconjugated curcumin separately from its metabolites and found piperine did not meaningfully raise plasma levels. Several researchers have argued that bioavailability claims here should rest on unconjugated curcumin rather than total conjugates, which is a large part of why the older figure and the newer measurements disagree.
So the honest position is this: piperine is a widely used, mechanistically plausible absorption strategy resting on one striking early finding that later independent work has not confirmed. Anyone quoting "2000%" at you as settled fact is quoting a 1998 paper and omitting what came after.
Why you can't just eat more curry
A reasonable question at this point: if turmeric has been used in cooking for thousands of years, why does absorption matter so much now? The answer is scale and concentration. The amount of curcumin in a typical serving of a turmeric-spiced dish is quite small, and traditional preparations often happen to pair it with fat and black pepper — a lovely bit of culinary wisdom that predates anyone understanding the biochemistry. But food-level amounts sit far below what's used in the research people cite when they get interested in curcumin in the first place, and closing that gap through diet alone would mean eating an impractical amount of turmeric.
That's the honest case for a supplement: it concentrates a standardised amount of curcuminoids and applies a deliberate delivery strategy, at a scale food can't easily reach.
The extract itself matters at least as much
Absorption is half the story; the other half is what you're absorbing, and this half is much less contested.
"Turmeric" and "curcumin" aren't interchangeable — turmeric is the whole spice, and curcuminoids are only a fraction of it. A serious supplement uses a standardised curcumin extract, meaning the curcuminoid content is measured and consistent from batch to batch, rather than ground turmeric root where the actual active content is anyone's guess. Curcumin C3 Complex® is one well-known standardised extract. The specifics matter less than the principle: you want a defined, standardised extract with a stated curcuminoid content, not a vague "turmeric" blend at a big milligram number.
If you only apply one filter to a curcumin product, make it this one. Standardisation is verifiable on a certificate of analysis. Bioavailability claims mostly aren't.
What to actually look for on the label
First, is it a standardised curcumin extract with the curcuminoid content specified, rather than plain turmeric powder? Second, does the product have any stated delivery strategy at all — piperine, a phytosome, a lipid or nanoparticle formulation — and is the brand willing to tell you what evidence sits behind it? Third, is the curcuminoid content confirmed on a batch-specific certificate you can actually read?
A product that leads with an enormous "turmeric" number and says nothing about standardisation or delivery is competing on the size of the figure rather than on what reaches your bloodstream. That much has not changed.
It's worth saying plainly, too, that curcumin is a compound studied for supporting normal, healthy function — not a treatment for any condition. The reason to care about the extract and the delivery isn't to chase a medical outcome; it's simply that if you're going to take curcumin at all, it should be a form your body has some genuine chance of using.
How we approach it
Our curcumin uses a standardised extract, Curcumin C3 Complex®, with the curcuminoid content stated on the label and confirmed per lot on the certificate of analysis. It is paired with BioPerine®, which is the most widely used delivery approach in the category — and, as above, one whose headline figure we're not going to quote at you as though the question were closed.
We'd rather be the brand that tells you a popular number is unreplicated than the one that repeats it because it's good for sales. The part of this we can actually prove — that the extract is standardised, that the curcuminoid content is what the label says, that the batch has been independently tested — is published on the product page for the lot you're buying. The part the industry can't yet prove, we're not going to pretend it can.
