How to Read a Certificate of Analysis
A certificate of analysis — a COA — can look intimidating the first time you see one. It's a dense page of compound names, numbers, methods, and limits, and it's designed by and for laboratories, not shoppers. But here's the reassuring truth: underneath all that, a COA has only about five fields that actually matter to you. Once you know which five and what each one is telling you, you can read any certificate in about two minutes and know whether the bottle in your hand is backed by real proof or just a nice label.
This matters because a COA is the single best tool a consumer has for cutting through supplement marketing. The label is a claim the brand makes about itself. The COA is an independent lab's receipt for whether that claim is true. Learning to read it puts you in a small minority of buyers who can actually verify what they're taking.
Field one: the lot number
Start here, because it's the field that makes everything else meaningful. The lot number (sometimes "batch number") ties the certificate to a specific production run — ideally, the exact one your bottle came from. Your bottle has a lot number printed on it; the COA has a lot number on it; they should match. This sounds like a technicality, but it's the whole foundation. A COA with no lot number, or one whose lot doesn't match your bottle, could be from any batch the company ever made — or from a flattering one produced specifically to look good. No lot match, no proof. Check this first.
Fields two and three: identity and potency
These two answer the most basic questions about what's actually in the capsule.
Identity confirms that the compound in the bottle is the compound on the label — that "magnesium bisglycinate" really is magnesium bisglycinate, not a cheaper substitute or a mislabeled ingredient. It's a yes/no confirmation that you're getting the right thing at all.
Potency goes a step further and tells you how much. It's usually expressed as a percentage of the label claim — so "100% of label" means the batch contains exactly what the bottle says, while a number meaningfully below 100% means the product is under-dosed relative to its own claim. This is where you catch products that list an impressive dose on the front but don't actually deliver it. A trustworthy potency result lands at or near 100% of what's claimed.
Fields four and five: the contaminant panel
The last two fields are about safety rather than dose, and they're the ones people most often overlook.
Heavy metals — typically lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury — should all read below established safe limits. These elements show up in trace amounts throughout the natural world, so the goal isn't a fantasy of literal zero; it's that they're measured and confirmed to be under the thresholds considered safe.
Microbials — the panel for harmful bacteria, yeast, and mold — should likewise read below limits. This confirms the product was manufactured and handled cleanly.
One important nuance here: "below limits" is not the same as "zero," and a COA that reads "below limits" is doing exactly what it should. It means the lab measured for these contaminants and found them within the safe range. A result of "not detected" or "below limits" is the good outcome — it's evidence of testing, not an admission of contamination.
A few extra details that separate a real COA from a decorative one
Once you're comfortable with the five core fields, a couple of finer points help you judge how much to trust a certificate. Look for the name of the lab that performed the testing — a genuinely independent, third-party lab is the gold standard, because a manufacturer testing its own product and publishing its own results is grading its own homework. Look for a date, so you know the testing is recent and tied to a current batch rather than a years-old sample. And you may see references to standardized testing methods (often citing established pharmacopeia standards); you don't need to understand the method codes themselves, but their presence signals that the lab followed recognized procedures rather than an ad-hoc process.
None of this requires you to become an analyst. It's pattern recognition: an independent lab, a recent date, a matching lot, recognized methods, and results that land where they should. A certificate with all of those is doing real work. A "COA" that's really just a branded graphic with reassuring words and none of these specifics is decoration, not verification — and learning to tell the two apart is most of the skill.
Putting it together: the two-minute scan
So your quick pass through any COA looks like this: confirm the lot number matches your bottle; check that identity is confirmed; check that potency is at or near 100% of label; and confirm heavy metals and microbials both read below their limits. If all five line up, you're holding a product whose claims have been independently verified for that specific batch. If any of them is missing — especially the lot number or the potency figure — that absence is itself the answer.
Why this is worth the two minutes
Most supplement buyers never see a COA at all, because most brands don't publish one — and a certificate you have to email customer service to request is a certificate the company isn't eager to show you. The entire point of publishing a COA openly, per batch, is to let you do exactly what this article describes: read the receipt before you trust the claim. A label tells you what a company wants to be true. A matching, independent COA tells you what actually is. Once you can read one, you'll never look at a supplement label quite the same way again.
