Magnesium Malate or Bisglycinate? Choosing by Time of Day
If you have already accepted that magnesium form matters, a second question follows almost immediately: which one, and when? Two of the best-absorbed chelated forms — bisglycinate and malate — are frequently sold side by side with near-identical marketing, and the difference between them has almost nothing to do with the magnesium. It has to do with what the magnesium is attached to, and those two partner molecules behave quite differently.
The magnesium is the same
Start here, because it clears away a lot of noise. Magnesium is magnesium. The atom your cells use is identical whichever form you take, and its roles — as a cofactor across a large number of enzyme systems, in normal muscle and nerve function, in energy metabolism — don't change based on packaging.
What changes is how much of it arrives, how it sits with your digestion, and what the carrier molecule contributes in its own right. Both bisglycinate and malate are chelates, meaning the magnesium is bound to an organic acid or amino acid and absorbed through amino-acid-friendly pathways rather than relying on the harsher route that cheap oxide depends on. Both are well absorbed and both are gentle compared to oxide or high-dose citrate.
So this is not a good-versus-bad comparison. It is a matter of picking the carrier that suits what you want.
Glycine: the evening argument
In bisglycinate, each magnesium is bound to two molecules of glycine — the smallest amino acid, and one that is not merely inert packaging.
Glycine has its own biological activity. It functions as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, and it has been studied in the context of sleep quality and the body's transition toward rest. It is also involved in collagen structure and in the synthesis of glutathione, which is a pleasant bonus rather than the main event.
The practical consequence is that magnesium bisglycinate is the form most people reach for in the evening. You are getting a well-absorbed magnesium plus a carrier associated with calm, which is a sensible pairing for a wind-down routine. It is also the gentlest of the common forms on digestion, which matters if you have had unpleasant experiences with magnesium before.
Malic acid: the daytime argument
In magnesium malate, the carrier is malic acid — a compound found naturally in apples and other fruits, which is where the tartness comes from.
Malic acid is not a neurotransmitter. It is an intermediate in the citric acid cycle, the central pathway by which your cells produce energy. Malate is a genuine participant in that cycle rather than a bystander, which is the basis for the association between magnesium malate and daytime or energy-related use.
It is worth being measured about how far that argument extends. Supplying additional malate does not straightforwardly accelerate energy production — the cycle is regulated by rather more than substrate availability, and the research on malate supplementation specifically is not as developed as the confident marketing implies. The honest version is that malate is a metabolically active carrier with a plausible rationale for daytime use, not that it is a stimulant.
What is uncontroversial is that magnesium malate is well absorbed, well tolerated, and doesn't carry glycine's association with settling down — which by itself makes it the more sensible choice for a morning dose.
Running both
Plenty of people take malate in the morning and bisglycinate in the evening, and there is a decent logic to it beyond the carrier molecules.
Magnesium absorption is dose-dependent in the same way vitamin C's is — the transport pathways have finite capacity, and a large single dose is absorbed less efficiently, proportionally, than the same amount split. So splitting magnesium across the day is a reasonable practice regardless of form.
The important thing when running two is to add up the elemental magnesium across both. The upper limit for supplemental magnesium is 350 mg per day for adults — and note that this ceiling applies to magnesium from supplements, not to magnesium in food, which is not subject to the same limit. Two products at 200 mg elemental each put you above it. That limit exists mainly because of the digestive effects rather than a serious toxicity concern, but it is worth respecting rather than ignoring.
Elemental, again
The single most common error in this category is comparing compound weight rather than elemental content.
A label reading "magnesium bisglycinate 1,000 mg" is describing the whole molecule — magnesium plus the two glycines — and the actual magnesium inside that is a fraction of it. The same applies to malate. A well-made label states the elemental amount separately, and a label that only gives you the compound weight is letting you assume you're getting several times more magnesium than you are.
When comparing two products, compare elemental to elemental or the comparison is meaningless.
Choosing, in one paragraph
If your priority is evening wind-down, or you have a sensitive stomach, or you only want one magnesium: bisglycinate. If you want a magnesium that doesn't carry a settling association and you'd rather take it in the morning: malate. If you want to split the dose for absorption reasons and like the idea of matching the carrier to the time of day: both, with the elemental total kept in mind.
What doesn't make sense is paying a premium for either while taking it inconsistently, or comparing them on compound weight, or assuming that a form you've heard more about is necessarily the one that suits your routine.
