Magnesium Threonate: What the Premium Is Actually For

Magnesium L-threonate occupies an odd position on the shelf. It is usually the most expensive magnesium in the shop, it is marketed with more specificity than any other form, and its label carries a number that catches out almost everyone who reads it the way they'd read any other magnesium. Understanding that number is most of what you need to evaluate the category honestly.

The elemental problem, in plain arithmetic

Start here, because it reframes every comparison you'll make.

Magnesium is always bound to a partner molecule, and the label weight describes the whole compound rather than the mineral inside it. The proportion that is actually magnesium — the elemental content — varies dramatically between forms.

Magnesium oxide is roughly 60% elemental magnesium by weight, which is precisely why cheap products favour it: a small pill can carry a big-looking number. Magnesium bisglycinate sits far lower, in the neighbourhood of 14%, because glycine is a substantial molecule. Magnesium L-threonate is lower still — around 8% — because threonate is bulkier again.

So a bottle advertising 2,000 mg of magnesium L-threonate is delivering somewhere in the region of 144 mg of elemental magnesium. That is not a criticism of the product; it's how the chemistry works. It becomes a problem only when someone compares that 2,000 mg against a 400 mg magnesium citrate and concludes the threonate is five times stronger, which is roughly the opposite of the truth.

If a threonate label doesn't state elemental magnesium separately, that omission is doing real work.

What the form is actually for

Magnesium L-threonate was developed with a specific goal: raising magnesium concentrations in brain tissue rather than simply in blood. The proposition is that threonate's structure allows it to cross into the central nervous system more readily than other magnesium forms.

That is a genuinely different aim from what other magnesiums are chosen for. Bisglycinate is picked for absorption and gentleness; citrate as a general-purpose option; malate often for daytime use. Threonate is the only one sold on a targeting claim rather than an absorption claim.

Which means the honest comparison isn't "is threonate better magnesium." It's "is the specific thing threonate is trying to do worth the premium to you" — and if what you want is simply to close a magnesium gap gently and affordably, the answer is probably no, because a well-absorbed bisglycinate does that at a fraction of the cost per elemental milligram.

How strong is the evidence?

Fairly assessed: the research base is real but early and thin relative to the confidence of the marketing.

The foundational work is preclinical, and preclinical findings frequently do not translate. There is some human research, but the body of it is small, several of the studies are modest in size, and a portion of the research is connected to the commercial interests behind the ingredient — which is normal for a branded ingredient and still a reason for measured language rather than certainty.

So the accurate statement is that magnesium L-threonate is an interesting, mechanistically plausible, actively researched form whose supporting evidence in humans is at an early stage. Anyone presenting it as established is ahead of the data.

It's also worth noting the obvious confound: most people trying threonate weren't getting enough magnesium in the first place. Dietary surveys consistently show a substantial share of adults fall short. If someone improves after starting any magnesium, the simplest explanation is that they corrected a shortfall — not that the specific form did something a cheaper one wouldn't have.

Cost per elemental milligram

Put the two facts together and you get the comparison that actually matters.

Because threonate is roughly 8% elemental magnesium and typically the priciest form on the shelf, the cost per milligram of actual magnesium delivered is dramatically higher than for bisglycinate or citrate. That premium buys the targeting proposition described above, and nothing else.

That's a legitimate purchase if the proposition is what you want and you've accepted the state of the evidence. It's a poor purchase if you thought you were buying a lot of magnesium, because you are buying a little magnesium and a hypothesis.

How to read the label

Three checks. Does it state elemental magnesium separately from compound weight? If not, estimate roughly 8% and recalculate. Does the brand describe the evidence in measured terms, or does it present early research as settled? And is the amount disclosed on its own line rather than inside a sleep or cognition blend, which is where threonate very often appears at token levels precisely because it's expensive?

That last one is common. Threonate's reputation gets borrowed by blends containing a fraction of a meaningful amount.
